Rick Reilly Tells Chicagoans What They Like

Thanks to Top Ten Nominee for sending me this. Remember when you were a kid and the new SI would come to your door? I do, and the first thing I always did was flip to the back and read Rick Reilly's column. And then remember in high school and college when his stories got shittier and shittier? Well after leaving SI he now writes for espn.com. Awesome. Apparently he thinks he can determine which sports franchise rules every city. Here's what he thinks about Chicago:
CHICAGO Bears. The Cubbies are the Windy City's cute Labradoodle pets, but the Bears are in the blood. "Everybody in Chicago loves the Bears," admits Cubs shortstop Ryan Theriot. Pro football is to Chicago what airplanes are to Dayton. In third, the Bulls. Fourth, Notre Dame football.

Fuck Rick Reilly. I hate that guy.

I didn't see what the big deal was until "Fourth.."

He has clearly never been to Chicago.

I would have to agree with Mr. Reilly on this one boys. I know it is hard to accept, but the Sox are kind of like the Red-headed step child of Chicago. The reason ND football is a HUGE deal has a lot to do with Chicago. I guess it is hard to see when they are bad and the Sox are good-ish. Maybe I'm wrong, but we will see in two years when ND is great again and the Sox are so so*.

*Based on the terrible contracts that have been given to older players that are getting bad for the Sox. Then again maybe Ken will pull something out of his ass, again.

As much as I am a Cubs fan, I think the Sox are clearly above ND. I mean ND football? I've lived all over the North Side my whole life and everywhere I go there are one or two ND fans, but half the people are Sox fans. Notre Dame? The Irish suck. I don't mean record-wise, I mean that they are racist, bible-thumping, cocky fucks.

half the people are Sox fans.

Well, no. That is the opposite of truth.

I mean that they are racist, bible-thumping, cocky fucks

Minus the bible part, but that is kind of Chicago in a nutshell. No?

rick reilly is an idiot and CLEARLY has never been to chicago. if he had been, his list would be as follows:
1: milwaukee brewers
2: black river falls tigers
3: kansas city roller warriors - kansas city's premier flat-track derby team.

seriously, how he got espn to pay him is a huge mystery to me. i can't stand listening to his annoying voice during his shitty features on espn. i think he's stoned most of the time as he is incoherent and usually fails to make any point whatsoever. i expect to see him writing for NQTC before long.

Reilly does suck. His stories are all the same: Oh, so you think Michael Phelps is a hero for winning 8 gold medals? Well you haven't met Jimmy O'Toole. He's a 10 year old boy with feet instead of arms and an asshole on his neck and he's going to run a 5k this week. Who's the hero now? Bam! Rick Reilly Journalism 101.

@Zach: Yeah Chicago is like that at times, but in terms of sheer numbers in the city, it just feels like there are more Sox fans in Chicago

@RSHR

hehe

By the by, I agree with you about Reilly, big douche.

@ SND

And you are probably right. I just still look at how the Sox WS was mostly ignored by, what seemed to be, the vast majority of Chicago. But in the end I think you are probably right.

If Notre Dame plays U of I, which team gets more support from CHI?

Answer: UIC!!

...but seriously, the correct answer is probably St. Ignatius.
